Get involved with social good: our February guide

In a blink of an eye, the first month of 2015 has just passed by (where did all that time go?). How far are you in keeping your resolutions? In January, we suggested a few ideas for those who wished to give back to the community, and to add on to the list, here are a few more suggestions for you to tackle in the month of February:

1. Celebrate with your loved ones at a social enterprise

February is a festive month and full of reasons to celebrate. If you are planning a dinner for your special someone, why not make it meaningful at the same time? While there are no lack of restaurants with the right ambience, the Michelin stars and the stature, there are also establishments that offer something extra – another chance at life for those who previously may have had no hope. La Parole serves up authentic French cuisine in a classy setting, and all net proceeds go towards a social enterprise that provides therapy to children with speech problems, especially those from low incogofor me families (“parole” is French for “speech”). Alternatively, try iBakery, a social enterprise that trains and employs people with disabilities through baking and the operation of a F&B outlet, which also has a pleasant alfresco area at their Tamar Park branch.

2. Play to your heart’s content at the annual Streetathon Carnival

Co-organized by social enterprise Run Our City and AXA Hong Kong, the Kowloon East Streetathon event that takes runners on a street marathon may be already full, but there are many peripheral events that are both family-friendly and with something for all ages. At the All You Can Play @Streetathon Carnival taking place on the 8th February, participants can have a picnic, visit the family fun playground, watch a concert and even do yoga along the runway of the old Kai Tak airport. Tickets for public sale are at HKD 50 each and proceeds would be donated to official beneficiaries. For event details, visit the event website or their Facebook page.

3. Enter the world of social good through film

Social causes and the stories behind them through the eyes of filmmakers of Hong Kong – this is the latest project by the For Good Company. “For Good: Film Project 2015” is a showcase of five short films about five different social causes in Hong Kong, including support for migrant workers, environmental protection and the visually-impaired. Be prepared for an engaging night as the filmmakers and representatives will be present to share more about their work.

Event Date: Friday 6 February 2015

Time: 7pm

Venue: Asia Society Hong Kong Centre (Admiralty)

4. Send warmth to the needy with an Asia Miles donation

In a previous post, we highlighted this meaningful social enterprise L plus H, and their initiative this winter season to gift needy people with the help of the public. With every donation of 2,500 Asia Miles, one sweater will be donated to the needy through charitable and non-profit organisations. This charity initiative is ongoing till the 28th of February, so there’s still time to take action, and to encourage your friends to do so too.
